Whether the weather

North Devon is known for its mild winters and rarely gets any snow, except on the moors of Exmoor and Dartmoor. However in early February we had the most snow the region has seen for 20 years. The roads were wonderfully quiet and most people enjoyed the rare weather, sledging on body boards, kite surfing on a snowy field or making huge snowmen. 50 snowmen were built in the park in Bideford and the town was white all over on the Quay and roads.

Traffic was unable to leave the town as both routes out towards the link road were under snow. Due to the hills, cars, lorries and buses could not manage to get up or go anywhere. There was a big traffic jam as people decided to sit in their vehicle and wait for the snow to thaw so they could move. It proved good sport for pedestrians to stand and watch as some crazy people did try to get up the hill, mostly to fail and get stuck.

A businessman from Ilfracombe remarked, "Business has been steady so far but I think we'll close this afternoon – mainly because I want to go out and play"
